Nijhof werkt met verschillende technieken, waarbij hij voortdurend afwisselt en onderzoekt: “Meestal begin ik onderzoekend, exploratief, met als startpunt een zelf opgelegde beperking in de aanpak of de beeldtaal. Vandaaruit ontstaan variaties en iteraties.”​

Zijn aanpak is nauwgezet en zorgvuldig. Deze gestructureerde, onderzoekende benadering leidt echter vaak tot experimenten die de zorgvuldigheid van het proces bewust ontregelen. Experiment of zorgvuldigheid, beide benaderingen voeden zijn concentratie en nieuwsgierigheid. 

De fysieke en landschappelijke omgeving vormt een grote bron van inspiratie. Wat Nijhof waarneemt in de wereld om hem heen, vertaalt hij naar beelden die balanceren tussen controle en toeval.
